Aquaponics And Earth

There are many differences between plant life grown in aquaponics and earth. Conventionally grown crops in earth tend to have a lot of pesticides and chemicals added to them - aquaponics is known as an organic way to grow crops. The technique has gathered pace the last decade and equipment is becoming readily available for all newcomers. Whilst it is relatively easy to get into there are certain factors that cannot be overlooked if you want a successful system.

Aquaponics And Earth - Important Factors:

You must try to choose the correct location for your aquaponics system - this is very, very important. It does not matter if your system uses fake light or natural light your system needs to get plenty of it. If you are going to set up the system outside then you will have to take the climate into account, especially if you are in very cold climates. If you are living in a colder climate you should really be using some sort of greenhouse to house the system in.

Aquaponics And Earth - Water

One thing about the water that cannot be ignored - air. The water must be aerated at all times otherwise the plant roots will rot and the plant will eventually die. This can be done by simple air pump or an even simpler fish tank pump - cheap and cheerful.

Aquaponics And Earth - Fish

Where you live can directly effect the fish you are able to use in your aquaponics system. Tilapia is a common breed of fish used in aquaponics and is very 'hard'. By hard I mean it can withstand many different water conditions. The one problem here is that it is banned from use in some areas. You should always check the local regulations to find out what type of fish you are allowed to use.

Aquaponics And Earth - pH levels

You must religiously check the pH levels of the water in your system - no excuses. The pH measures how acid or alkaline your water is and this is important for the fish. Fish have an optimal pH level of around 6.5 to 8.5, while plants survive better with a lower level of pH... Try to keep your pH level for an aquaponic system around 7.0 for the optimal results.

The main difference between aquaponics and earth is the medium which the aquaponics plants use instead of earth or soil. With aquaponics I would recommend gravel or rocks. Be careful when purchasing aquaponic growing medium as some rocks contain certain chemicals which are not good for the system.
